The Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) First Aid Responder (FAR) training is the recognised standard for occupational first aid in workplaces.
Thousands of people are dying each year in situations where first aid could have made the difference; this includes nearly 900 people who choke to death and 9000 who die from heart attack every year.
It is comprehensive, three-day course accredited by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC). On completion of this 3-day first aid course, the First Aid Responder will be equipped with the necessary practical skills, knowledge, and confidence to give effective life support, diagnose, and treat injuries or illness, and maintain care and comfort of a patient who has become suddenly ill or injured in the workplace or elsewhere until the arrival of emergency medical services.
This course is specifically designed for individuals with an interest in becoming a qualified First Aid Responder or staff who is required to act as First Aider in their place of work, community group, voluntary organisation and in the home. There are currently no prerequisites for this course. Students should be physically well enough to carry out CPR as well as other practical skills.
Following the FAR training participants should be able to:
• Deal with life-threatening or potentially life-threatening conditions until the arrival of emergency medical services
• Provide an adequate response for conditions not thought to be life-threatening but are necessary to prevent further harm before the emergency medical services arrive
• Provide first-aid in a wide range of environments including the workplace, home and recreational settings
• Display the requisite personal skills including composure, competence and self-confidence while understanding their limitations.
This course is classroom based, delivered by a combination of theory lessons, practical skills and practice sessions. The CFR part of the course takes about 4-5 hours and is DVD led. The assessment will be skills based and a multiple-choice exam is designed to reinforce the knowledge and skills learnt on the course.
• Maximum of 8 learners
• Course duration: 3 Days
• Examination and Assessment is held on Day 3 of the course.
Successful course participants will receive a First Aid Responder certificate. The certificate will expire after 2 years.
Complementary candidate pack (face shield, triangular bandage, small dressing) and First Aid Response manual are given to each learner.
Statistics show accidental burns, falls and poisoning are among the leading causes of deaths and injuries in Ireland for children aged 0-14 years old and that 55% of deaths of young children and adolescents resulting from injuries could have been prevented.
Research by the charity shows that only 5% of people in Ireland are trained in first aid. With 95% of its population trained in first aid, Norway is the leading country in Europe for first aiders, followed by Germany and Austria (80%).
