What Is FAR Refresher Training?

The First Aid Response (FAR) Refresher course is a two-day programme accredited by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC). It is the recognised route to renew occupational first aid certification in Ireland, ensuring workplace first aiders remain competent and compliant.

This practical course revisits core emergency response techniques and updates participants on any changes to national protocols. Learners refresh their ability to assess medical emergencies, deliver life support, and manage injuries or illnesses until emergency medical services arrive.

Who Should Attend FAR Refresher Training?

This course is designed for individuals who already hold a valid PHECC First Aid Response certificate and need to renew their qualification. It is suitable for staff across all industries who act as designated workplace first aiders, as well as those involved in community, voluntary, or educational settings.

Participants must provide a valid in-date FAR certificate on booking. Learners should be physically capable of performing CPR and other practical first aid techniques as part of the assessment.

Course Delivery, Duration, Assessment

The FAR Refresher course is delivered over two classroom-based days using a mix of theory, practical demonstrations, and scenario-based learning. Learners are guided through the same key skills and responsibilities outlined in the original FAR course.

The Cardiac First Response (CFR) component is fully integrated into the course, in accordance with PHECC guidelines, and includes refreshed training in CPR, AED use, and cardiac care response.

• Assessment: Practical skills evaluation and written multiple-choice exam
• Group size: Maximum of 8 participants per course

All learners receive a FAR Refresher manual, pocket mask and candidate pack, including a face shield, triangular bandage, and small dressing.

Certification

Successful participants will receive an updated PHECC First Aid Response certificate, valid for two years from the date of completion. Employers are responsible for scheduling refresher training before expiry to remain compliant with workplace safety standards in Ireland.
